The Mystery Of Acapulco Gold

Every stoner, new and old, has heard of the sativa flower strain Acapulco Gold. It’s a strain that’s taken on a life entirely of its own. It is renowned throughout much of the world for its potency, its sweet, earthy flavors, and its unmistakably unique, almost psychedelic, effects. It has been featured in several movies (most notably Cheech & Chong’s timeless comedy Up In Smoke) and TV shows, and rumor has it that Acapulco Gold was delivered in the 1960s as a wedding gift to future Vice President Dan Quayle (or so the story goes).
Where It All Began
But what makes Acapulco Gold larger than life? Over the years, its name has become synonymous with high-end cannabis and has been sought after by cannabis newbies, seasoned connoisseurs, and celebrity personalities alike (including the legendary Jack Nicholson). Perhaps the secret to Acapulco Gold’s success lies in its origins. In 1964, Acapulco Gold was officially defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a “special grade of cannabis growing in the vicinity of Acapulco.” Its name was perhaps inspired by the flower’s mix of brownish gold and green hues.

Legend has it that Acapulco Gold was traditionally grown in the Guerrero Mountains, located just outside the city of Acapulco on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The sunny, sea-blown landscape of the region could have been a major contributor to Acapulco Gold’s initial success. All cannabis plants are particularly sensitive to a variety of environmental pressures, including temperature, exposure to light, humidity, soil pH, etc. Each of these factors can have a significant impact on a plant’s overall health and plays a big role in determining which genes a specific plant will exhibit and which traits will remain dormant and undetectable. When two plants with the exact same genetic make-up are grown under different environmental factors, scientists and cannabis growers refer to those two plants as cultivars or phenotypes of the same genetic strain.
The result? The quality of a particular strain is determined not only by the its genetic make-up but by the conditions in which it grows in as well. Take, for example, Cannabis Sativa (or “sativas” for short). Sativa strains like Thai Stick, Maui Wowie, and Acapulco Gold, with their long, sinewy branches and thin fan leaves, grow best in warm, tropical zones (areas like Thailand, the Pacific Coast of Mexico, and Hawaii). It’s under these warm, moist conditions that these plants can develop unique and exotic flavors and effects.
